APRIL 12, 2024 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Phenotypic Recordings is proud to present Landscape to Light, a full album of original compositions by Scottish composer and pianist James Ross, with the Maxwell String Quartet, which provide a rare opportunity to experience Scottish literature, folklore, and the natural beauty of Caithness and the Flow Country, through a classical music lens. The album invites listeners into Ross’ homeland of Caithness, the northernmost point in the Scottish mainland, and evokes the spectacular but fearsome power of the sea, the legends of fairy mischief passed down through generations, and the landscapes depicted by Scottish novelist, Neil Gunn. We love the music created by the smaller ensemble. Phenotypic Recordings especially supports chamber groups, jazz ensembles, and other small musical groups.
We believe that the collaboration and communication within these groups of musicians is a metaphor for the creative process in any successful team. Each individual works within the ensemble to create the sound of a single unit.
The end result is beautiful and inspirational music.

We believe music has no limits or categories, and seek to shine a light on any transcendent work of art. Whether Haydn, avant-guard jazz, folk-influenced Scottish, Middle Eastern electro-acoustic, or original compositions that cannot easily be labeled, we highlight music that we feel embodies beauty, the joy of exploration, or simply moves the soul in an indescribable way.

We believe that a great musical experience can shine a light on world problems and provide a unique and lasting insight to these issues. We also believe that such an experience can be the impetus for listeners to address these issues, and advocate for change.

We produce high quality recordings of phenomenal new compositions performed by world-class artists, which allow everyone to encounter these treasures. We want new music to live, thrive and enhance the human experience.
