Segara Gunung - Kronos Quartet
Album Art Designer: Bambang Wahyudi
For more than two centuries, four instruments have provided composers with an intimate space to explore ideas too personal, too experimental, or too profound for almost any other medium.
For Kenji Bunch, entering that conversation took time. "It took me a really long time to get up the nerve to write my first quartet," he admits. "I played a lot of quartets, always intended to write one, but found ways to avoid it. A lot of the time I just thought, I have no business doing this."
There is perhaps no greater test for a composer than the string quartet.
Listening across the five quartets collected on Songs for a Shared Space, one encounters a composer whose voice is remarkably assured—lyrical yet adventurous, intellectually curious yet deeply human. Spanning fifteen years, from 2008 to 2023, the complete string quartets of Kenji Bunch reveal not a composer searching for an identity, but one continually discovering new ways of expressing it
