ART of ELAN ~Visions & Dreams
Visions & Dreams
is not a catalog of the past, but a living document of relationships: between composers and performers, between audiences and spaces, between imagination and sound. The works gathered here span a wide emotional and stylistic terrain, yet they are united by a common thread: each piece reflects an act of imagination made tangible through sound. Together, they form a mosaic of voices — playful, searching, contemplative, and bold — that define the evolving identity of Art of Elan.
Our mission has always been rooted in the thoughtful curation of musical programs. The idea of creating an album that celebrated our 20-year-old “Visions and Dreams” came about through the generosity of spirit that Mike Hostetler and Phenotypic Recordings embody.
Art of Elan’s unique brand of chamber music, presented by stepping outside the traditional concert hall and into galleries, museums, and unconventional spaces, has helped cultivate numerous partnerships throughout the region. It has allowed us to create an environment where music is not just heard, but felt as part of the community’s cultural fabric. Central to this journey is our commitment to the future; since our inception, we have championed the commissioning of new music, partnering with a diverse array of today’s most forward-looking composers, many of whom are showcased on this retrospective anniversary album.

20TH ANNIVERSARY RETROSPECTIVE ALBUMS
SUMMARY:Our mission has always been rooted in the thoughtful curation of musical programs.
You’ll hear the playful sounds of Paul Wiancko alongside the hypnotic musical motives of Reena Esmail, interspersed with music that celebrates a whole host of emotions: joy, fear, hope, longing, nostalgia, awe …
These recordings capture an ongoing conversation between artists: some performers, some composers, many who are both. They represent a commitment to living composers who are helping create the music of our time, sometimes challenging the boundaries of what an instrument — and we as humans — can endure and embrace. They mark a moment in time for our organization, and for the countless listeners who commune with us through music.
Ultimately, this anniversary album is a testament to the power of artistic curiosity, celebrating twenty years of innovation and community for an organization that began with only a handful of Visions and Dreams. Gratitude abounds …

COMPOSERS
DISC 1
-
Paul Wiancko (b.1983) is an acclaimed composer and cellist, as well as the Director of Chamber Music at Spoleto Festival USA. He is a founding member of the viola and cello duo Ayane & Paul, as well as the quartet-collective Owls. As cellist of the internationally-celebrated Kronos Quartet, Wiancko regularly appears on the world's foremost stages. In addition to a full performance and composition schedule, he is a dedicated teacher, mentor, and advocate for music education at all levels.
-
Born into a well-educated family in Guangzhou, China in 1953, Chen Yi spent the early part of her childhood studying the works of Bach and Mozart, becoming proficient on both the violin and piano, until the cultural revolution of 1966 made it impossible to continue this kind of musical education. After her family’s house was searched and all musical instruments confiscated, Chen Yi was forced into manual labor in the countryside, where she was exposed to Chinese folk culture and traditional Chinese music, all of which made its way into her music.
-
Michael Oesterle is a Canadian composer living in Deux-Montagnes, Québec. While he writes primarily for the concert hall, he has composed for theater, film, animation, and dance projects. “Parlour Games” came about as a co-commission from a consortium of bass players in 2021, including bassist and Art of Elan affiliate artist, Jeremy Kurtz-Harris.
-
Reena Esmail works between the worlds of Indian and Western classical music, and brings communities together through the creation of equitable musical spaces. She is a Founder and Artistic Director of Shastra, a non-profit organization that connects the classical music traditions of India and the West.
-
Nahre Sol performs, composes and teaches an eclectic mixture of music that draws from aspects of improvisation, the avant-garde, traditional Western forms and harmony, jazz, and minimalism. She runs a notable series of videos on Youtube that distill her distinct perspective as a classically-trained pianist with an insatiable appetite for new ideas about music theory, harmony, practicing, and composition.

LJOVA (Lev Zhurbin) stands at the forefront of his generation as the premiere bridge between the world's musical cultures. Ljova was born in 1978 in Moscow, Russia, and moved to New York with his parents, composer Alexander Zhurbin and writer Irena Ginzburg, in 1990. He divides his time between performing as a violist in diverse groups ranging from his own LJOVA AND THE KONTRABAND, to string quartets, jazz combos and Gypsy bands; studying and arranging music for Yo-Yo Ma, the Kronos Quartet, Jay-Z and others; and composing original music for film, TV, theatre and the concert stage.

The music of Juhi Bansal (b. 1984) weaves together themes celebrating musical and cultural diversity, nature and the environment, and strong female role models. Her music draws upon elements as disparate as Hindustani music, the spectralists, progressive metal, musical theatre and choral traditions to create deeply expressive, evocative sound-worlds. As an Indian composer brought up in Hong Kong, her work draws subtly upon both those traditions, entwining them closely and intricately with the gestures of western classical music.
-
Gabriela Ortiz, born in 1964, is one of today’s leading composers, known for blending Mexican folk, classical, and avant-garde styles into a distinctive, globally resonant voice. Born in Mexico City to founding members of Los Folkloristas, she studied in Mexico and London, earning a doctorate in composition and electronic music.
-
Jessie Montgomery is a GRAMMY® Award-winning composer, violinist, and educator whose work interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, poetry, and social consciousness, making her an acute interpreter of 21st-century American sound and experience. At the heart of Montgomery’s work is a deep sense of community enrichment and a desire to create opportunities for young artists and underrepresented composers to broaden audience experiences in classical music spaces. She was named Performance Today’s 2025 Classical Woman of the Year.
-
Michi Wiancko is a versatile and highly imaginative composer, violinist, and collaborator, whose multi-faceted creative projects and organizational work prioritize artistic discovery, as well as community resilience and social change.
-
Aftab Darvishi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1987. She started playing violin at age five, and as she grew older, she began playing other instruments like the kamancheh (Iranian string instrument) and classical piano.
“Daughters of Sol” was commissioned as part of the Kronos Performing Arts Association’s Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, which is made possible by a group of adventurous partners, including Carnegie Hall and many others.
Launched in their 2015/16 season, Kronos’ Fifty for the Future is commissioning 50 new works—by 25 women and 25 men—devoted to contemporary approaches to the string quartet and designed expressly for the training of students and emerging professionals. Kronos has premiered each piece and created companion digital materials, including scores, recordings, and performance notes, which can be accessed online for free.
